THE ART OF
GIVING AND RECEIVING FEEDBACK

What feedback does, why we often find it difficult and how to handle it successfully.

Giving and receiving feedback is the basis for every collaboration and the essence of a healthy organisational culture in which people can grow. Yet feedback is missing in most workplaces. Or we approach it in the wrong way: too scarcely, too late, too offensive. This is not without risk. In today’s complex work environments, feedback is an indispensable skill.

“Why do we often find feedback so difficult? What do your own experiences have to do with it? And how do you use it to bring yourself and your employees to a higher level?”

In the interactive training course The art of giving and receiving feedback, we start from your cases. This way, you translate scientific insights and new skills to your own professional environment. After this training you will understand how feedback works, what it does and why we often find it diff icult.

You learn about the rational and emotional aspects of it and you gain insight into your own triggers and how you can avoid them when you receive feedback.

Of course, you also learn the right techniques to give feedback, even in difficult situations.
You do this in a group and with a simulation actor. You work on a personal action plan and receive a useful visual and/or e-book from us that you can also use after the training.

  1. Why is it so difficult?
  2. Our primal brain is to blame. It is focused on survival and sees feedback as a threat. The result? Fleeing, fighting or freezing!

  3. Don’t miss the turn
  4. Fortunately we also have a human brain (neocortex). This enables us to make a turn and deal with feedback in a rational way. Condition? Being aware of your own emotional triggers.

  5. The rules of the art
  6. You learn techniques for giving good feedback, even when it gets difficult. The DESC, mirror and diving board techniques no longer hold any secrets for you.

  7. Let’s do this!
  8. Practise! Practise! Practise! With your cases, in group and with a simulation actor.

After this training:

  • You know why giving and receiving feedback is sometimes difficult.
  • You know that there is both a rational and an emotional aspect to feedback.
  • You know the effect of feedback (both receiving and giving).
  • You know your own emotional triggers and how to avoid them.
  • You can apply a number of proactive, concrete conversation techniques to your cases.
  • You can deal with the reactions of the other party (re-actions).
  • Concrete cases f rom the group

  • Simulations with an actor
